Drop Your Nets and Follow (4th Sermon in Series: Revealed)

The fishing industry of Jesus’ day could be highly profitable, but it was strenuous work and needed major organization. But in the middle of these fishermen’s routines something stops them. A man walks by them and sees what they are doing. And says, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”  And they dropped their nets and followed him. These fishermen dropped their nets… the things that they worked so hard on every single day. That they spent so many hours making and mending. They just drop them.

Something in Jesus’ voice convinced them. Something in this person who calls to them, makes them drop their nets and follow. Knowing that if they leave it all behind, they will never be able to come back and just pick them up again. Sometimes Jesus walks into the middle of our lives, in the middle of our routines, and calls to us to follow him. But to follow him would mean dropping everything that we’re holding onto.

Do we drop our nets and follow? Even if it doesn’t make sense?

I’m not saying that Jesus is calling us to quit our jobs or drop our entire lives to enter into the church or to work in service (although if you are hearing a call to that please come and talk to me) but for most of us we’re probably not called to that extreme.

But Jesus does call each of us.

When we are called, it is often to places outside of our comfort zone. It may be to places or experiences that don’t feel like the perfect fit. After all, Jesus called 4 fishermen, to be his first disciples and the evangelists of our Faith.

But, when Christ calls us to come and follow, we can be certain that we can drop our nets, because we will never want to turn back after we see where we are going.

Christ is calling us to come and follow. Will you drop your nets and go?
